Thanks to all that responded to me plea!!!

You were *all* right on the money. It was the fat beafy
part of the palm of my hand that was just grazing the
shutter release button on the grip of the F5.

I am now resting easier. I was almost convinced that
my *new* F5 came equiped with a "mind of its own"  
from Nikon and at no extra charge.
