Hello, Roland -

The view camera lenses you mentioned (by Horseman or otherwise) will yield
the same focal length on a 35mm body as on any other camera, and will have
the same perspective on a 35mm body as would any lens of the same focal
length (i.e. a Horseman 105mm f/5.6 lens will yield the same perspective on
a Nikon body as my Nikon 105mm f/2.5 will). One difference is that the view
camera lenses will have a greater image circle, because they are made to
cover a larger piece of film than a "normal" 35mm lens. This allows for
camera movements (shift and tilt) which would otherwise be problematic with
lenses that were designed to be used in a fixed position in front of a small
piece of film.

What may be leading to the "equivalent focal length" confusion is the fact
that a 105mm lens, for example - WHEN USED ON A 4x5 VIEW CAMERA - will yield
a perspective equal to a 28mm lens on a 35mm camera (because both of these
outfits have a similar focal length/film size ratio) and folks sometimes
refer to this as "equivalent focal length". Indeed, a 105 will give you a
much wider perspective on a 4x5 than on a 35mm camera, but only because the
film size (and lens coverage) is greater on the view camera, not because the
focal length has changed.

A "105mm lens" is simply any lens which renders an object at infinity as a
sharp image at a distance of 105mm behind the optical center of the lens
(which may or may not be exactly at the lens flange). In other words, a 105
is a 105, and assuming they all have adaquate coverage, they will all yield
the same perspective on a given format. (If I've only served to confuse the
issue further, please e-mail me offline.)

Cheers!
Mark Parsons

Subject: [8] Horesman View Camera Converter ,2nd request

The web site for the Horseman VCC (view camera converter) is below:

http://horsemanusa.com/pd_frame032.html

I was hoping someone could tell me approximate equivalent focal
lengths that the following lenses (made by Horseman specifically for
the VCC) woud give me when used on a Nikon 35mm body and the Horseman
VCC?
80mm F4
105mm F5.6
135mm F5.6

The VCC also allows one to use Large Format Lenses with frange focal
distances between 90mm and 300mm, mounted on #0 or #1 shutter.
What would equivalent focal length be on a Nikon body with say a 300mm
large format lens?

I'd really appreciate some insight on this matter.
