This is normal and the flash is telling you that the tilt head is set below
the horizontal axis.  Tip the flash up one notch and the distance scale will
stop flashing.

typical situations?

I suggest that you turn off the balance fill flash feature for typical
indoor flash snapshot type pictures until you have a chance to experiment
with the amount of compensation that meets your preferences.  Oh, one more
thing; read the manual!
