I've wondered the same thing. I'm saving my pennies for the new 80-200
2.8 AF-S lens for the ability to utilize it with the TC-E 1.4 and TC-E
2.0. The draws of the 28-70 for me are the fact that it's wider than
the current 35-70 2.8 and would have 77 mm filters to match my 80-200
and 85 1.4. I haven't had any problems with AF speed with lenses
around normal so the AF-S doesn't have any appeal on it's own.
