"D" is for the distance information the lens supplies to the camera. The focus distance is useful for some metering situations and flash photography. "ED" stands for Extra-low Dispersion glass. Dispersion is the effect you get when a glass prism splits light to its separate colors. This effect is obviously not a desirable effect if it happens in your lens! It would cause color fringing and loss of sharpness, especially with long focal lengths. ED glass is special glass which minimises this problem.
