Does anybody know of a way of getting controllable long exposures
with a manual camera? I'm in the habit, when I go hiking, of leaving
my Nikon FM to take star trail shots of the night sky, and a couple of
times I've overslept and the pre-dawn light has burned out the image.

I was wondering if some kind of mechanical timer exists, rather like
the old clockwork self-timers which attach to a cable release, which
one could set to release the shutter button after say three or four
hours. Has anybody on the list come across something like this?

I know that the same thing can be achieved with the higher-spec
electronic cameras, but even if I had one of these I would be
dubious about using a camera with a battery-driven shutter for long
exposures in cold conditions.

Thanks in advance
