Ed, one word for you: castles.
Their gloominess and mystery are enhanced by winter weather...
B&W film is especially appropriate, as it makes them look even
older.  Of course, you may not share my fascination with castles
since you see them everyday, but being from the US, where
our whole country is younger than most of England's monuments,
I am perhaps easily impressed....
For colour slides, i would recommend sticking around those
seasides at around sunset, and if the clouds are thin enough
you should get some brilliant clouds/stormy seas.
Bring a tripod, and try shooting some long exposures of the
waves..  --christopher
