Wouldn't it be lovely if we had a program mode on
our AF cameras wherein we could set our desired
aperture and have it automatically focus for the
hyperfocal distance? After all, it already knows
the focal length of the lens we are using and we
just told it the desired aperture which are the
only two parameters (for a given circle of
confusion) needed to compute the hyperfocal distance.
I never use the special program modes because I'm
not sure or am not satisfied with the camera is
doing there. For landscape modes, I generally select
f8 or f11 and focus on the hyperfocal distance.
(Bob, at http://members.aol/photoinfo/dof.html,
has a better method using his H-slide rule.)
But why wouldn't this be a most useful program mode
on our AF and P&S cameras?
Seems to me it would be trivial to add that mode.

I agree it would be nice to have a true hyperfocal mode, but I suspect I
know the reason they don't - people wouldn't read the manual, would
accidently enable the mode, and would then be calling Nikon, wondering
why their brand new AF camera doesn't focus properly.
Its sad, but you know it would happen.
On another front - regarding the hood for the new 28-105....I haven't
seen it personally, but I wonder if the hood for the 28-85 zoom would
work all right, or if there would be vignetting. Has anybody tried that
combination?

Steve
