Hi Chris!

Well, you asked about how the AF-S 80-200 works with an N90(non-s).
I've been using this combination now for about a month, and the
lens is one of the sharpest I've ever used. As for the focussing,
it's a bit slower than you're going to find on any of the higher-end
bodies (N90s, F100, or F5), so if you're really worried about
autofocussing speed (as in a need to use it for sporting events
where the focus changes very rapidly), I'd opt for another camera body.
If you're shooting diving from below the board, get the F5 or F100.
If you're shooting swimming, the lens itself has a decent focussing
speed, especially if you set the limit switch on 2.5m-infinity.

Other than that, the lens itself is very crisp (and could still be
used if you upgraded your camera body later). The big advantage I'm
finding is using it for a not-too-heavy lens along with the TC-20e
to get to 400mm. And it makes a pretty good close-up lens with the
addition of the Canon 500D screw-in lens as well, so it gets a fair
  amount of use.
