<I would like to leverage your expertise to help
me to make a jump to flash photography. The camera
I'm using is the FM2n, which provides no TTL flash
metering. I am mostly interested in using flash as a
fill, and maybe sometimes as the only light source.
With this in mind, I have three questions to the list:

    1. How do you use non-TTL flash as a fill?
    2. As the only light source?
    3. Which flash would be most suitable for the FM2n?
I realize that something like SB28 can do the job,
        but isn't it a bit of overkill?>

The FM2n is my primary 35mm camera. I use it with the Vivitar 283, but a
Sunpak 383 Super would do as well.
For fill flash -- set camera & flash to the film's ISO. Set the camera for
any proper ambient exposure which includes a shutter speed at or slower
than x-sync. Set your flash on auto, and the output for one stop LESS than
the lens' aperture. For instance, camera set to 1/125, lens to f/8; flash
to f/5.6. Works like a charrm.

For flash-only illumination, set the camera to 1/250 (which is x-sync) and
the flash and lens' aperture to whatever output is suitable for the
situation, taking into account the flash-to-subject distance.
Any auto flash will do, The two mentioned above are top choices, as is the
Vivitar 285, or Metx 45CT1 (if you want more power).
