I had the same experience when I travelled to Memphis. I went to see Fedex
and shot some pics at night without flash. I have used XP2 on 1600ASA.

I tried to convice the airport personell to let me take the films (Memphis and 2
times in Schiphol). I only managed to do it once.

One guy said films are safe up to 1600ASA. So I guess it is a good idea to
have a plain roll of 3200 film with you and you say it is going to be pushed to
6400.

Maybe it is better to put films in the luggage, as they are checked less often.
Or you should send the films via mail. (If you use surface mail they are
probably not checked at all, but you will have to wait :-)

The X-ray safe boxes, which are offered are usually of no use, as the x-ray
machines automatically increase the x-ray intensity to look into your box.
(BTW: x-rays can not be blocked, even with one meter of lead wall. The
material is only reducing the intensity of the rays)

Probably the best idea is to insist on having your films hand checked. But you
should always have enough time. If you are in a hurry, I guess it is not working.

Anyway: why are film boxes made of metal and not plastic? If you would have
plastic film packages you could just put them in your jacket.

Best wishes
