Boris asked about the legal basis for having your film hand inspected
instead of x-rayed at airports. This only applies to the US, but FAA
regulations require airport security to hand inspect your film if you
request it. The relevant FAA regulations are found at the following
website:

http://www.faa.gov/avr/AFS/FARS/far-108.txt

Print off a copy to take with you, but keep in mind that being polite goes
a long way. I have never had a problem in US airports. Even in foreign
airports I find that being humorous (mock begging) will often cause even
stubborn security personnel to relent. If that fails, go away for a few
minutes, then come back and try a different security person. Someone also
mentioned putting your film in checked baggage on the logic that checked
bags are x-rayed less often. Not true. Most US airports are getting
equipped with high voltage x-ray equipment that will fog film of virtually
any speed. Never put your film in checked luggage (see the Kodak website
for their recommendations).
