I to have been using rechargeable alkaline AA batteries.  I use them all
the time in my SB-20 flash.  The brand I use is "Pure Energy" which is a
competitor to the brand Jim mentioned.  Since I own a F601 I do not have
experience with how they work in camera bodies but in my flash they work
the same as non rechargeables.
