I have been on the list for a while now (almost a year) and have noticed a
recurring thread on the list. Batteries. While I have seen numerous
comparisons of lithium AA, alkaline AA and Lithium CR123 batteries there is
one other option that I have not seen listed. That is the rechargeable
alkaline AA batteries from Ray-O-Vac (The ones with Michael Jordan's picture
on the package). The cost of a 4 pack of AA's is approx. $6.50 and the small
4 battery charger is approx. $10. The charger is "smart" i.e. it shuts off
after full charge so they do not overcharge. The batteries themselves also
do not have a memory problem and the biggest advantage for me is that the
charge loss over time is the same as regular alkalines. Therefore, you can
charge a bunch up and leave them in your bag for a few weeks (months) with
no significant loss of power. I have used them successfully for over a year
in an N90s, SB-28, SB-21, SB-22s as well as several digital cameras, GPS
units, etc. They are rated for a minimum of 25 charges but I have sets that
are well beyond that. Just food for thought. Comments, criticisms and money
gladly accepted.
