Howdy all,

I'm a bit bewildered in the transition from Nisus Classic to Nisus X--

I opened a book of poems which has lots of line-breaks or soft returns (shift-returns) with a regular return or paragraph at the end of each stanza. It seems Nisus X doesn't behave the same at all, rendering what were line-breaks as what appears as an exclamation mark or an invisible character. Searching for line breaks seemed to find both renditions, but replacing with "soft returns didn't seem to fix the problem. This was before I upgraded from Panther (which we never got familiar with) to Tiger. Then I see I needed a newer (than 2.1.2) version of Nisus Writer X, so sprung for 2.5a, which I was pleased to see brings in graphics, though the text font, size etc. seems to be lost.

Perhaps I should drop back to a more stable version, but my past experience indicates that wouldn't be the issue for this particular question... For now, I am trying to get an idea on the new philosophy of paragraphs and new lines within paragraphs. The line breaks still seem to be very different-- and the manual doesn't seem to cover the issue to a level I need to understand the transition.

Using TypeIt4Me, where the expanded text enters multiple lines with simple returns, renders a single paragraph as near as I can tell, but with the new lines caused with invisible characters-- (yes, set to show invisibles, and they do, mostly). Still, a triple click (or even a quad click) only selects the line-- not the whole "paragraph".

Typing directly a shift-return, renders a curl-back arrow and new line as expected, without the leading of the paragraph, etc.-- though again, triple clicking the line selects only that line, not what I would consider the whole paragraph!

After importing or pasting a poem from Nisus classic, and then doing a search and replace for the invisible line breaks (what originated as shift returns in Nisus Classic, selected by using the shift key in combination with arrow key) seems to render a regular return, making fully separate paragraphs.

Is this an issue for others of you? What is going on or what adjustments do I need in my philosophy in order to restore harmony and allow me to take control of my text again? I really want to be able to use Nisus X, instead of relying on the increasingly bothersome Classic environment, but this one has me stumped.

Are there now more than two items involved? Are line breaks, soft returns, "shift-returns" no longer the same thing?

If I can successfully get over this hurdle, then maybe I can look at how to make a macro to select a sentence at a time and read it. Tiger's text to speech is much better than Panther's, which was a decided down-grade from OS 9 -- I was about to give up on X at that point!

Trying to jump from OS 9 to Tiger
