Striving
for a fatter paycheck comes naturally to all working professionals. But
what's also coming naturally to many of them err…us, is a plumper
waistline. With the transport options to work getting more comfortable
and take-aways more convenient, weight gain is almost a certain
probability.
Given by the way restaurants fill out during lunch
hours, it is clear that our city's corporates are not necessarily the
healthiest lot. And with a balmy weather, a calendar dotted with
holidays and umpteen office parties always around the corner, the
problem can only get worse.
In
fall and winter, it becomes particularly difficult to stay on track,
experts say. Intermittent holidays and regular business obligations
along with the temptations of office treats and cold weather keep
workers indoors, and combine to make it difficult to maintain healthy
habits. Workers who plan ahead and apply moderation will be in a much
better position to avoid this late-winter weight gain.
Some
employees don't even leave (or have to leave) the building for their
meals. Instead, they hit the vending machines as their source of
nutrients. And with fast-food delivery systems becoming second nature
to our urban life, many people pick up the phone to order on a daily
basis.
If you're one of the above victims of office life
(coupled with laziness) and are packing on more pounds than punch, here
are some simple ways to be healthier at work.
Indulge responsibly
Let's
face it, sometimes the dessert is just too hard to pass up. You look
like a snob when your entire team is cutting a luscious black forest
cake and you refuse, stating health reasons, don't you? The key is
everything in moderation. Have a tiny piece of birthday cake. When
finished, get back to work and politely say no to any other requests
for a party.
Burn calories, en route
You
may argue that you're too pressed for time to 'walk it out' to work,
but the results of a daily walk en route to work can be amazing after
say a month or two. We're not saying you walk from your Malad home to
your Cuffe Parade office, but if you drive, park farther away from the
building than necessary to get in a little more distance; if you take
the 'BEST' route, get off a couple stops early and trek the rest.
Climbing up the stairs every day is the simplest way to burn calories.
The higher your office is, the better it is for your fitness!
Don’t think twice to pack it
Packing
your lunch will help your fitness levels.. Period. You may have
logistical issues (or may be simply getting embarrassed getting a dibba
to work every day); but this habit will not only help you to control
your nutrition and portions - it'll also fatten your wallet, instead of
your tummy. If you just thought you don't have a caring wife to do the
job for you, find a dibba service!
Get ‘Face time’
Control
those tiny traps of modern offices that force us all to get lazy:
Instead of e-mailing, calling or instant messaging your co-worker, walk
over to him or her. Rather than having someone pick up your papers from
the printer or a nearby department, jump up and grab them yourself.
Extra steps add up, we tell you.
Keep your mouth busy
Not
by talking or anything else you might have thought! Chewing gum or
nibbling on sweet nothings can help you avoid those trips to the
canteen to grab a cold drink or crave for pastries and other sweets.
Drink and be merry
Needless
to say, we all do get a little stir-crazy at work and often turn to
food for distraction. Instead of munching on those fat-full snacks to
ease your boredom (or stress), try drinking some water. Not only will
it curb your appetite, it will save you many unwanted calories. And
please, don’t switch to soft drinks soon!
Stock the shelves
We
spoke to many who snack during the workday, and most of them admitted
to eating more unhealthy snacks in the office than at home. Some also
said taaza fruits or vegetables weren't included in their snacks during
the workweek. We suggest you load your office drawers with healthy,
filling snacks. At the risk of being looked upon as boring, this will
make it easier to elude comfort food temptations on chilly days.
Company at the company
With
the worry our dieticians are showing these days, chances are many of
your co-workers will have more-than-ideal waistlines and are constantly
tempted picking up the phone and ordering pizza. Get together and start
a lunch or fitness group (i.e. gymming/walking after work). keeps
everyone on track.
