The
heat is on. And with the change in weather it's time for a wardrobe
make-over as well. Get rid of your body hugging kurtas and skinny
jeans. Because the fashion gurus say that the look for this season is
comfortable-chic with fluid cuts in breathe-easy fabrics making a
come-back.

Flare for fashion

The
verdict is clear - the flare is big and back in fashion. In fact
designer Sandeep Khosla of Abu-Sandeep speaks of reviving the classic
48-kali kurta, which was all the rage in the '80s and made a comeback
briefly under the garb of the empire-line kurta. "We're going to see a
lot of free-flowing cuts this season in light weight fabrics such as
georgettes and Banarasi cottons," says Sandeep. Designer Neeta Lulla
believes that Jodhaa-Akbar will serve as a catalogue for couture this
season. And as expected with royalty emphasis is on full volume and
girth. Designer Maheka Mirpuri on the other hand, goes west with flare
and suggests a vintage empire cut silhouette or an innocently seductive
chiffon off-shoulder dress, which is fitted till the waist. Says
Mirpuri, "The trends of the '70s are making a comeback. The entire look
is ultra feminine, dramatic and yet very practical."

And
while designer Ritu Kumar vouches for the anarkali, she also suggests a
slightly different look which yet again requires yards of cloth - a
sarong teamed with a t-shirt and a bright chunni to complete the
ensemble, which can be worn comfortably by day and night.

Colour palette

Mirpuri
opts for fruity colours such as canary yellow, raspberry pink as well
as pure white. Says she, "Colour blocking is bound to be in where
strong shades are paired with muted ones to tone down the look." Kumar
sees a palette full of pastels in summer down to brighter hues in the
monsoon. But Lulla's preference hinges on pastels for casual wear and
warm tones for couture.

 As expected with summer, supersized
floral and paisley prints are very in. Elaborates Lulla, "In spring
summer '08 one will see a lot of vibrancy in psychedelic as well as
floral prints."

Go bare

Minimalism
is the order of the day. To balance this minimalistic turn, Mirpuri
suggests colourful edgings and delicate details in ruffles and pleats.
While Khosla suggests barely-there sequin work. Lulla goes with an
ensemble that's lightly studded with crystals or edged with lace: both
of which she stresses will be 'big' this season.
Accessories

Big
is beautiful. "Glares are big, bags are big and angular. Chunky neck
accessories are also a must-have," says Mirpuri. Ritu Kumar also
believes, "Chunky and kitsch will rule accessories this season." While
Khosla insists on an 'eclectic' and 'anything goes' feel that's ‘not
kitsch'. Shoes according to Mirpuri are open-toe with pointed heels or
totally flat for added comfort. As far as foot wear is concerned,
Khosla says, "The chappal is here to stay. Chappals in simple gold and
metallic silver encrusted with crystals are very much in vogue."
However Lulla's preference lies with a chic looking strappy high heeled
pair.
