distracted world, errors owing to lack of concentration have
multiplied. Where on one hand it's affecting performance in the office
environment, it’s a major cause of poor student performance in exams
and to a possible extent, also a deterrent towards healthy
relationships. Psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty sorts out your routine
problems.ABSENT- MINDED OFFICER

MrGandhi says he is remaining quite absent-minded since the past sixmonths. 
Recently, he forgot to carry an important project report forthe meeting, 
causing high embarrassment and flak from seniors. 
Solution : On examining, heconfessed of being constantly humiliated by his 
senior that hadnegative impact on his appraisal and bonus. Otherwise an 
excellentprofessional, he feared facing his boss during meetings and failed 
toexpress himself. After being compelled to share his frustration, hemustered 
courage and confronted his senior. Thankfully, it worked. 

What it means:Angst, anxiety, sadness, and lack of enjoyment of work may cause 
lapsesin concentration and subsequently short-term memory. Early 
resolutionhelps and can prevent subsequent depression.

SILLY POINT

Otherwisea good student, Shreya began making silly errors in her studies 
andperiodic tests. Her notes remained incomplete. She was about to bereferred 
to a shrink when her Principal intervened.
Solution: "I sleep for not more thanfive hours a day as I have long tuitions. I 
also wait for my dad toreturn home from work," revealed Shreya. Being in her 
SSC, she simplyrefused to sleep longer. The Principal reasoned with her as to 
howmandatory sleep is for the development of the brain, for learning andmost 
importantly, maintaining the brain body system. 

What it means:Lack of sleep leads to poor concentration and forgetfulness. 
Thiscauses reprimand and subsequent loss of esteem. A rested brain worksfaster 
and is more accurate.

ZERO CONCENTRATION

Mr.Kamal just could not fill his passport form. In fact, any task whereinone 
needs to provide a lot of details would get him tensed. Not onlythat, Kamal had 
poor concentration problem since birth and had lost outon several opportunities 
in life.
 
Solution: Duringa counseling session, he learnt the skills of carrying out 
anyintensive activity in shorter durations of time, with many breaks. 
Forexample, instead of studying a file non-stop for an hour, he does thesame 
with three spurts of 15 minutes each, accompanied with a fiveminute walk 
between every session. 

What it means:For some, concentration problem may be due to genetic reasons, 
and canbe dealt with medication and counseling. Some may also show symptoms 
ofselective excellent attention (high concentration in activities ofinterest). 

SHRINKING BRAIN?

A49-year-old bank clerk believed his brain was shrinking when he foundmany of 
his files riddled with errors and being corrected by hisseniors. It was hard to 
deal with.
 
Solution: Thisperson in question had a new transfer and now it took him five 
hours aday to travel to and fro from office. His singing classes and daily 
jogsuffered and in turn, his razor sharp ability to focus in office took 
abeating. Though he refused to believe there's any connection betweenthe lack 
of recreation and the concentration lapses, he agreed to singduring lunch 
breaks and when traveling. Things became better when heskipped bus to reach 
railway station and walked it up instead. Spotjogging at home was also 
practiced. 

What it means:Exercise, joyful ecstatic recreation improves concentration and a 
lackof is harmful. Travel time should be used to joke, sing and any 
similarjoyous group activity.

JUNK TO BLAME ?

Ms Keyaloved junk food as she’s stopped cooking after a new job. However, 
herboss complained that her performance on job wasn’t as good as it usedto be 
earlier. Her husband complained that she is not there when hecommunicates.
 
Solution: Keya's blood testsrevealed Anemia and low Vitamin B12. Also, she was 
unhappy with herhusband who refused to share household work. Her counseling was 
aimedat replenishing the lost emotional energy between the couple teamedwith a 
prescription of dietary supplements. She was advised vegetables,fruits and lots 
of water. 

What it means:Emotional pain can cause loss of concentration and vice versa. 
Lots ofaerated drinks and junk food hurt the brain and causes deficiencies. 
Attimes, lack of concentration can be an early sign of depression orother 
mental illnesses.

Concentration problem may be due to manyother reasons. However, in a fast paced 
city like ours, recreation,sound sleep and a regular healthy diet are the key 
words for a goodmental health.
