Increasingnumber of road mishaps and traffic congestion, have 
always been a graveissue for the concerned Mumbaikars, who feel helpless in 
cracking theissue. However, the ‘traffic warden scheme’ of traffic 
policedepartment is set to ensure public involvement in tackling the 
trafficrelated problems.    
 
FormerTraffic D.C.P, P S Pasricha, had launched the Traffic Warden Scheme,1986 
– a voluntary service given by the public to the Mumbai TrafficPolice in order 
to control the road traffic. The scheme was laid on thethough of Pasricha, who 
feels that the Indian economy runs on wheels,so when the traffic moves, the 
Indian economy also grows. 
 
TheJoint Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kamble, Mumbai Traffic chieffurther 
explains, “The traffic warden scheme is an endeavour toencourage Mumbaikars to 
volunteer for a social and human motive.” 
 
Eligibility to be a traffic warden 
A citizen of India and a Mumbaikar
Age: 18 years to 58 years
Sound Occupation
Holding driving license in Mumbai with a minimum of three years driving 
experience
Good medical fitness
Fair knowledge of Marathi, Hindi or English
Minimum educational level is H S C or equivalent
A sound social, financial and economical background
No criminal record
No affiliation to any political party or trade union, auxiliary military unit 
or hold any honorary rank
 
Application for appointment 
Application forms can be obtained from and submitted at the Education 
Department, Worli
 
Selection of appliers
 
Aselection committee of assistant commissioner of police, senior 
policeinspector, police inspector and a sub-inspector of police is appointedby 
the Education Department to shortlist the appropriate candidates
A letter is sent to the selected interviewees hereby announcing their training

 
Training 
training period: three days
Conducted by either of the selection committee members at the Traffic 
Institute, Bandra
training is theoretical as well as practical
training imparts knowledge on diverse categories such as road safety, 
pedestriancontrol, road markings, road signals, traffic co-ordination, 
forearmindications, etc.
Attendance during the training sessions is voluntary 
 
Certification and identification 
A trained person shall, on being appointed as a Mumbai traffic warden receive a 
certificate of appointment
Uniform,required equipments, personal transport should be self-managed. 
Thedress code for female traffic wardens is a white sari and for maletraffic 
wardens is a white shirt with a pair of blue trouser. 
 
Atraffic warden does not get paid for his/her services, as it is avoluntary. 
The service should be given for minimum four hours in a weekas per convenience 
of the volunteer. The traffic warden can eithervolunteers in his residence or 
office locality or can be appointed at aparticular junction by the divisional 
officer. Accordingly, he mustfile attendance at the divisional office, which 
enables the departmentto evaluate the ability and commitment of the warden.
 
Thefifty-four-year old senior traffic warden of South Mumbai division,Ramesh 
Mundada shares, “I volunteer at the Wilson College junctionafter my working 
hours and many a time I manage the trafficsingle-handedly.” Senior traffic 
warden of Chembur division, MukeshRohra points out, “Our objective is to 
control the pedestrians whilethe police manage the traffic. Co-ordination and 
understanding betweenthe two plays an important role especially during 
accidents and publicprotection cases.”
 
Currently, 147 traffic wardens are active in Mumbai. “We are glad that 
Mumbaikars are approaching for public service and investing their time and 
energy to resolve traffic issues,” concludes Kamble.
