As the number of people increases and spacedecreases, space-saving ideas and
devices go at a premium. There areideas that we can incorporate into our homes
to help ease the crampedspace. Economical yet classy space-saving furniture
allows to make themost of a room and helps in creating a feeling of space. The
primaryobjective should be to adjust furniture size to meet the practical
needof space.

Beds are perhaps among the most space consumingitems in most homes. These are
often the problem areas also for thosehomes, which do not have the benefit of a
guest bedroom. Sofa-cum-bedswere the West’s answer to this problem. Furniture
pieces like Sofa cumbeds help to maximize space and increase functionality of
an area.Every space conscious customer today, has the advantage of choosingfrom
an array of amazing innovations. With a variety of local, Indianand imported
furniture easily available in the market a smart selectioncan convert bedroom
into a living room and then back into a bedroomagain as and when one requires.

“These sofa-cum-beds are neatlyfashioned and it is often difficult to tell that
they actually pull outinto a bed. These are like regular, upholstered sofas.
You can lift upthe cushions and fold down the flaps to open into a bed, as
thecushions placed on it fit like a mattress,” says Goldee of Goldeefurniture.

Besides the fold-down option, sofa-cum-beds alsocome in a pull-out form where
the cushions also form the mattress forthe bed. These come in single and
double-bed options and fold up tomake a seating arrangement. When they are
opened they are the size of abed (single or double depending on whether it was
a chair or sofa). Thefabric that is used on these sofas is part-polyester and
is easier toclean.

Sofa-cum-beds are a little more expensive as comparedto the normal sofas
available but are quite comfortable. The averageset of sofa cum bed starts from
Rs 18,000 onwards. When the need arisesto upholster the sofa again or get new
cushions it will be on theexpensive side.

“This makes it a fun bed for the youngergeneration but not a viable option for
the elderly or overweight.Getting up from these beds can be quite different for
those who haveproblem knees,” shares Sneha Shinde from Kalyan. “Those who are
usedto the traditional wood-based beds, this would be much too soft and notgive
their bodies the support they are used to” she opines. These bedsare best used
in the children’s bedroom where they can be used aschairs in the day and opened
up in the night when needed withoutcramping up their room with a bulky
conventional bed. Being all foamthey are also safe for babies and toddlers who
could injure themselveson other beds.

If selected wisely, one can get a bed and sofa at the same time, without losing
much space at the same time.
