• First thing you need to do is tonarrow down on an artist and this requires
research. Look into theartist's profile thoroughly and go with an artist who is
a certifiedart student. Also make the time to go to the studio and have a look
athis/her work for yourself.

• Hygienecannot be stressed enough. When deciding on a parlour make sure
it'sclean as this reduces your risk of catching a nasty infection. Also,
areputed tattoo parlour will ensure the use of brand new needles.

• Whenyou're deciding on a design, refer to the artist's catalogue yetremember
that if you have a particular design in mind, you must providea clear brief to
the artist who will then sketch it out for you.

• Oncethe design is sketched on paper, ask the tattoo artist to stencil it
innon-permanent ink on to your skin. This way, you still have one lastchance to
make changes to the design before it's too late!

• Choosethe colours of your tattoo based on your own skin tone. While a
goodtattoo parlour will have a range of colours for you to choose from.Remember
that not all these colours will suit you.

• Ifyou're given a choice between metal based ink and natural organic ink,go
with the latter as it is safer on the skin with a very lowprobability of an
allergic reaction.

• Tattoosare not as painful as the lay-man wrongly assumes. If you're still
notconvinced, ask the tattoo artist for a numbing cream.
