No point drinking lots of water, says study
Adetailed re-look at what is known about the benefits of drinking waterby the
glassfuls reveals that the belief is not backed by hardevidence. While it is
clear that humans cannot survive for long withoutwater, very little research
has assessed how drinking extra fluidsaffects the average individual's health.
Researchers Dan Negoianu andStanley Goldfarb of the University of Pennsylvania
reviewed thepublished clinical studies on the topic and they found solid
evidencethat individuals in hot, dry climates, as well as athletes, have
anincreased need for water. Besides, people with certain diseases benefitfrom
increased fluid intake. But no such data exist for average, healthy individuals.
In addition, no single study indicates that peopleneed to drink the recommended
eight glasses daily. Indeed, it isunclear where this recommendation came from.
