Losing sleep? Blame it on long working hours
Nearly10 percent of Indians are suffering from the sleep disorder and
theproblem is increasing," said Garima Shukla, a neurologist at the All
IndiaInstitute of Medical Sciences in Delhi at a conference earlier thisweek.
Incidentally, the first week of April is observed as the insomniaweek in
several countries. Shukla said, "Our young generation and evenschool-going
teenagers are victim of insomnia.. Long working hours, watching TV and surfing
the internet are the leading causes of thisproblem. There is at least a 50 per
cent increase in patient flow.Pressure in the work field, changing
socio-cultural problems, lack ofemotional support are the other reasons why
people are losing sleep. These days, youngsters are sleeping for just two or
three hours whiletheir body metabolism asks for longer sleep hours. Psychiatric
problemslike fear of failure, of losing one's near and dear ones are addingfuel
to sleep disorders."
