As and aside, Back 10+ years ago I was working in Boston.  A friend I
made up there
told me how he got new video cards supported.

He purchased 2, then on a Saturday afternoon he would walk through the labs at
MIT and find someone that looks the part.  He offered him a new card
for free if
they could determine the correct settings for Xwindows to drive it properly.
All they had to do was email him the settings.

It worked every time he tried it, and then gave the x-settings out for free.

Not quite the same as plugging into the graphics accelerators on the
new lines of
cards, but it does make me wonder if there are some 'out of the box' ways to
solve this kind of issue.
