Where I live in the toolies (roughly 3 miles from any 'proper' cell signal), SPRINT works pretty well. Just in the last year or two has AT&T and Verizon started working here. Go a few miles away and only T-Mobile works.
4G isn't available from any carrier in my area, and the towers in my area are all 3-rd party towers so I don't expect them to 'enhance service' any time soon. Depending on your SPRINT phone, you may be able to tether it but they officially discourage it without the 'appropriate' data plan, and they really want you to buy their 'portable hotspot' or other gadget. IMHO, there is no truly 'national' or even 'regional' cell service with or without data that covers everywhere well. Figure out what you really want from a vendor that serves the area you inhabit most and go with it. >From what I see, all the services are targeting getting about $100 per month per device as a 'reasonable revenue target'. That kind of 'service' makes me want to go back to tin can and a string days. Forever tilting at the economic windmill ...
