Let's divide that question into two parts.

My AT&T POTS (plain old telephone service) line only gives me CallerIDNumber. What the Cobra does is put the port number (01 or 02) of the cell phone that takes the call (it may link to two cell phones) in the CallerIDName and puts the calling number in the CallerIDNumber. Asterisk _could_ parse the CallerIDName to identify which trunk was called and react (IVR or dial plan) accordingly. Net gain over the POTS.

Yes, my cell phone does give me both CallerIDName and CallerIDNumber; some times in all cases. The call record still resides in the cell phone should I desperately need that information. Yeah, I know. You wanna see the CallerIDName to know whether or not to answer the call.

And yes, what AT&T wants for CallerID is <expletive deleted>
