As far as removing the old packages, I'm not sure how they are packaged on ubuntu, but `apt-get remove node-*` or something might help. If you don't mind having partially installed stuff and removing it the "right" is too hard, just delete /usr/bin/node and /usr/bin/npm and it will stay out of the way. Though actually on ubuntu, I believe usr/local/bin is before /usr/bin in $PATH anyway, so as long as you have node in /use/local/bin or in a local nvm folder it will shadow the old node install.
