Currently, drag and drop is the only way. I do plan to add an import
dialog. Although it's not complicated, it's not very high on the
priority list.

Note, however, that *every* graphical file manager supports XDND. You
don't have to use a heavy-weight one. Even 'xfm' will do.

As long as all the files have the same samplerate, you'll be fine.
wave, ogg, flac, doesn't matter. However, playing back compressed
files does incur significant CPU usage.

I don't have a recommendation. I keep jackd running, personally, and I
keep things like a2jmidid running outside of any sessions. Note that
jackd can be configured to autostart...

The documentation itself is not in wiki format (yet?). If you want to
edit it, check out the git repository and edit the */doc/MANUAL.mu
files. I'll happily accept patches.
