I wouldn't call it a non-unixism (people often have spaces in their
home directory name). My reason for doing it is that having a space in
the default path makes it obvious when any of the scripts or other
code can't handle spaces in paths (a more common problem with shell
scripts than C). Think of it like a vaccination ;-)
