Thanks Nils, that does help. It's pretty much what I had in mind. I just wasn't aware of jack_transport.
 
Out of curiosity, what keys do you bind each of those actions to?

I don't know where I got the command line program "jack_transport" by
Jeremy Hall, maybe it is included in Jack itself.

With this program I have made four "global" hotkeys through my Window
Manager.

They are, in this order:  play, jump to start, pause/resume, stop

bash -c 'echo play | jack_transport'

bash -c 'echo locate 0 | jack_transport'

bash -c 'echo toggle | jack_transport'

bash -c 'echo stop | jack_transport'
