Surat Six medical students were suspended for ragging seven first-year
students at the Government Medical College here on Tuesday. The
incident was reported on Sunday after which a complaint was filed with
the Anti-Ragging Committee of the college. The college council has
suspended the accused for six months, and they will not be allowed to
stay in the hostel during this period.

Hospital sources said the six first-year MBBS students were called by
the accused (second and third year MBBS students of the same college)
to the Raj Empire Multiplex at Bhatar Road on Sunday evening.

The six accused, identified as Anand Meena, Gaurav Bhagmar, Jitendra
Gupta, Shubhash Bishnoi, Anshal Jain and Rajendra Lakhawat asked the
victims, Akash Ramchandani, Surabh Dasade, Sachin Sharma, Punit Singh,
Abhishek Bansal, Adesh Arora and Vijay Sharma to strip. But the juniors
refused to comply and returned to the hostel.

Dr Shailendra Bajpayee, Dean, Government Medical College, said: “The
incident came to light when the Anti-Ragging Committee of the college
found out about the incident through student sources. The victims were
told to give a written complaint. All the accused and victims were
present in the college council meeting on Tuesday evening.”

He added that all the heads of department of all faculties of the
college were also present at the meeting.

Dr Bajpayee added: “The council ruled that the accused should be
suspended for six months and expelled from the college hostel. We have
also planned to take police action against them.”

Dr Ganesh Govekar, chairman of the Anti-Ragging Committee, said: “The
victims were called to the multiplex as nobody was present at the
spot.” He added: “In the hostel, there was a danger of being caught.
The act of the accused senior students comes under the definition of
ragging, and we will deal with them strictly so that nobody repeats
such act in the future.”
