DURGAPUR: NIT-Durgapur has suspended 20 students for two months for
allegedly ragging five youths studying in the first year.

The victims lodged a complaint on the anti-ragging website of the HRD
ministry, saying they had been ragged in August. The Centre then
directed the NIT authorities to investigate the matter.

The NIT management called the 20 students on Thursday. Of them, 18 are
second-year students while two are in the third year. They are from
mechanical civil, computer and electrical engineering departments.

The authorities handed over suspension letters to the 20 students and
directed them to vacate the hostel within 24 hours. The students have
been suspended till October 31.

A K Mitra, (dean, administration) confirmed that the 20 students had
been suspended. He said the varsity would take strong action against
the students as per central government's anti-ragging directives.
