CHENNAI: Alleging that he was ragged and thrown from the fourth floor
of the hostel building by some senior students, an engineering student
has moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State
government to pay an interim compensation of Rs.5 lakh for treatment.

Justice K.Venkataraman ordered notice regarding admission returnable in
two weeks. He also allowed private notice.

In his petition, Shoban Babu of Melur in Madurai district stated that
he was doing first year in mechanical engineering at the Hindustan
College of Engineering, Otthakaal Mandapam, Coimbatore, and staying in
the hostel.

On October 22, 2009 some identifiable senior students demanded money
from him for a party. When he refused, he was ragged and also
threatened.

He complained to the hostel warden, who assured him that he would take
action against the seniors. The same day, the seniors took him to the
fourth floor and assaulted him.

When he raised an alarm, other students staying in the hostel came to
his rescue. The petitioner alleged that he was thrown from the fourth
floor. He became unconscious, his spinal cord was injured and his leg
fractured.

He regained consciousness and was able to speak only on January 10.

He prayed the court to direct the authorities to entrust the CB CID
with the case for a fair investigation.
