Rebased this onto `master` and cleaned up the mypy/ruff fallout. CI's still failing on `messages.pot` drift though, since this PR adds a few new translatable strings. Running `./scripts/translations/babel_update.sh` and committing the result should clear the unit-tests job (babel-extract is red on `master` itself at the moment, separate thing).
