Review comment:
       I don't think you want to memoize this signature as different databases 
may have different mappings for the same `time_grains`. It seems: 
   
   ```
   @utils.memoized
   def name_to_duration(database):
       time_grains = database.grains()
       ...
   ```
   
   seems safer.
