Richard’s suggestion . . . spreading the finger-hole positions and widening the bore . . would certainly result in a chanter that is more comfortable to play when conventional positions feel cramped. I believe this was the approach adopted by Andy and Stan May in their G chanter design, with brilliantly successful results. A wider bore will also produce a more powerful tone, wonderful from the hands of Andy, but perhaps less welcome from a beginner looking for ‘social playing with other pipers’, the situation which Helen’s enquiry was originally about.
