Hello Julia and John I always make sure any thread I use on pipes is well waxed and it seems to last (5+ years) even with fairly liberal use of olive oil. Sorry about the chemistry lesson - it was to emphasise that the stuff people poured in their ears probably didn't have much free oleic acid in it, which is important as far as pipes maintenance is concerned. Also (at risk of starting off another debate) Ian Corrigan recommends silicone grease in place of vaseline. Thoughts? As aye Anthony --- On Fri, 14/1/11, Julia Say <julia....@nspipes.co.uk> wrote:

So far all I have done is make the observation. It seems to be worse on the thin sewing thread (which is mercerised cotton) than on the thicker crochet thread - also cotton, but presumably differently processed. I also occasionally use Vaseline, whatever that is in chemical terms (no, I don't need to know!!), particularly on drone slides. But that recommendation was made specifically for ivory.
