Anthony

I can't offer any clarification, and I am more fascinated by your
descriptions of the dance steps and the rhythm of the music than the
word used to describe them, though it's evidently a potent word with
   many meanings.

As for 'Shield's Hornpipe', I do not know if there is any evidence to
connect Shield with The Morpeth Rant beyond a relatively late
attribution in the Clough mss. The tune appears under the Morpeth Rant
title in the 18th c. I am unaware of anyone having connected it with Wm
Shield's own writings - does anyone know otherwise?

   Cheers

   Matt
