Anthony I can't offer any clarification, and I am more fascinated by your descriptions of the dance steps and the rhythm of the music than the word used to describe them, though it's evidently a potent word with many meanings.
As for 'Shield's Hornpipe', I do not know if there is any evidence to connect Shield with The Morpeth Rant beyond a relatively late attribution in the Clough mss. The tune appears under the Morpeth Rant title in the 18th c. I am unaware of anyone having connected it with Wm Shield's own writings - does anyone know otherwise?
