All,

What do you make of the following situation:

Suddenly and without warning, a Toshiba Satellite 2590 laptop running
Windows 2000 with a NetGear FA410TX PCMCIA network adapter stopped
communicating with the network.

Whenever a program was executed that attempted to use TCP, the following
error was displayed: "The Application failed to initialize." and the
program terminates with error code 0xc00000005.

I can not modify any network settings because when I try I get the error
"A network error has occurred." when accessing the network properties.
I have thrown in the Windows 2000 CD and attempted a simple "Repair"
process, and failing that I will try a reinstall, because the NIC is
functioning correctly. It seems to be some sort of protocol
malfunction. I can't reinstall those protocols because I can not access
the network properties sheet.

Strangely enough the laptop is verified against the domain and the login
script even runs. As soon as this happens any "net" commands in this
script bring up the outlined error.

During the repair process when trying to re-add the machine to the
domain, I am presented with the following message:

"The domain could not be accessed due to networking problems. Would you
like to proceed for now and try joining a domain later?"

How are you supposed to troubleshoot a message like that? What are
"networking problems" ??

I hate to say it but I wish I could press ALT-F2 so I could find out
what was going on during the install process :-)

I fear that if I reinstall this laptop I will get the exact same error
message because in effect it is going through the same steps right now.
What should I do? Does it sound like a hardware problem? How am I
supposed to know *what* the problem is with an error message like this??
