Hi,

This release is only for ntfs-3g-devel and it includes a new cluster
allocator to improve large file performance in close to full and/or highly
fragmented disk scenarios, and without negatively effecting old, unrelated
performances, reliability and functionality.

This version is being tested for about two weeks, without apparent
side-effects, only improvements are visible which are sometimes quite
impressive. For example to copy a CD iso image in a 80% full disk scenario
which is very fragmented gives the below performance numbers:

     COPIED ntfs-3g-1.0 ntfs-3g-1.317-BETA
    47251456 6% 14.91MB/s 16.93MB/s
    82116608 10% 11.68MB/s 15.52MB/s
   161447936 21% 10.95MB/s 11.62MB/s
   232718336 30% 8.28MB/s 13.55MB/s
   305463296 40% 4.33MB/s 12.74MB/s
   379387904 50% 2.21MB/s 9.78MB/s
   455671808 60% 1.45MB/s 12.66MB/s
   531693568 70% 0.95MB/s 9.95MB/s
   607453184 80% 0.59MB/s 11.64MB/s
   758628864 100% 1.40MB/s 11.43MB/s

 Time spent: 0:08:37 0:01:03
 Fragments (extents): 3129 143

Tiotest numbers with 4 threads give also an order improvement in similar
conditions (0.782 MB/s vs 7.6 MB/s).

Please test it and report immediately if you have problems. Otherwise this
will be announced as release candidate earliest on Monday night and
released as stable in about ten days.

I'd also like to note that this is not the ultimate solution. Quite many
things can be improved significantly still but to further progress in this
area, other issues need to be solved first, and it would be nice if people
could already use this performance improvement, which is the most
complained thing at the moment.

Have fun (& backup),
