No idea if that example from the Wiki ever worked but this might be the answer
to what you want:

\useMPlibrary [dum] %% sample images
\starttext
  \startplacefigure [title=Alpha, group=one, groupsuffix=a]
    \externalfigure
  \stopplacefigure

  \startplacefigure [title=Beta, group=one, groupsuffix=b]
    \externalfigure
  \stopplacefigure

  \startplacefigure [title=Beta, group=two, groupsuffix=c]
    \externalfigure
  \stopplacefigure
\stoptext
