This is a simple case of rtfm. From chapter 7 of the pdftex manual: "pdfTEX supports inclusion of pictures in png, jpeg, tiff and pdf format. The most common technique -the inclusion of eps figures- is replaced by pdf inclusion. eps files can be converted to pdf by GhostScript, Acrobat Distiller or other PostScript--to--pdf convertors."
