Hi Mikael, thank you, there are some interesting ideas.
We have already seen a lot of randomization in paths; duplicating a randomized path with varying saturation enhances the effect. With PGF/TikZ I could maybe use a brush decoration on a path. Is it possible to use a irregular "pen" in MetaPost? With transparency? The MF manual says in 1.11, pens are limited, but not how. Or are properties (MF manual 8.10) the way to go?
