4.0.3 is the latest stable on ntop.org / source forge. Be sure to use autogen.sh to "configure". - it does stuff that configure alone may not.

Ie: two contiguous dashes / hyphens with no spaces? Also, If you're compiling why not use 4.0.3? And - are you using autogen.sh or configure?
