Given your requirements, ntop is not likely your best tool.

Take a look at argus, or etherape, or any of several other tools that
might be better suited for your needs.

The killer is your need for "longer term storage", which it would be
helpful for you to more narrowly define.

ntop isn't designed for long-term storage, though it's very good at
what it does.
