We have started to add ElasticSearch support in ntopng, and this is
another option to use instead of SQlite. But all these are experiments
until we find a solution we like.

Have you guys considered MongoDB? I don't have much experience with it
myself (I prefer CouchDB for loose schema needs) but I understand its
pretty fast at persisting data. It's used in Graylog2 to persist high
rate logging data and works nicely with technologies such as ElasticSearch.
