I had assumed you were doing a static installation, following the
instructions in docs/BUILD-NTOP.txt.

I updated the faq, but really, running "make install" is pretty normal as
part of installing any package from source. It's a libpng issue, not
ntop...

WRT RedHat, what makes it so difficult - and worth the careful
instructions - is that most RedHat users only understand (barely) rpms. And
installing from an rpm means you don't run make install (yourself) - it's
all hidden from you. That's why it's such a PITA to manually update a
package - it's both totally new and yet you really don't know (unless you
look carefully) what's already there!

I have both worlds, since Tigger is a RedHat box (as was Eyore), while Pooh
(and formerly Piglet) are Linux from Scratch.

Alright. My problem was a little different than the one in the FAQ but I
did solve it. Because I had installed 2.0.1 and it had used the older
Libpng. The old header file was still in /usr/include. Running make
install after make'ing the new libpng solves this problem. Probably a good
idea to add it to the installation instructions. Hope this helps anyone
else with this problem. In fact I imaging the same technique should work
for people with the Redhat problem.

Thanks,
Chris

Yes, and we discussed it on list

Basically, you need to update some stuff - you're running RedHat, which has
the 1.0.8 shared libraries installed.

Check this entry, "fatal libpng error: Incompatible libpng version" in the
FAQs on snapshot

Sorry guys here is the message that I am getting. I thought I would add it.
I went through the Makefiles looking for references to libpng-1.0.8 and
there was only one and I corrected it. Still doesn't work.

Anyone else seen this?

Thanks,
Chris

libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.0.8
libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.2.1
gd-png: fatal libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application and

Really. I had a problem on mine when I installed it with it linking to the
older version of .png but installing the newer one. How did you get around
this? Did you simply compile the older version that was included instead?
I would like to use the newer versions if possible.

Thanks,
Chris

Great snapshot, whatever you fixed seems to have helped, I'm using the
netflow device, had an 8-hour run (let a friend check it through the web
interface, something there crashed it), restarted and it's currently
still running this morning, a 14-hour run a record, so whatever was done
between the 13th and 14th was definitely a positive step.

MIKE
