Yea, ntop does it to the I run it on too, something gets stuck and it
consumes all memory ram/swap rendering the machine hopelessly io bound,
I'm running the same kernel on 10 other machines ranging from 50-300
days of uptime, so I'm certain it's not a linux/kernel issue.
