Andre,

Here's an exerpt from a Todd Logan's article in win2000 magazine.

"The Offline Files functionality is enabled by default on all Win2K
Professional computers. However, you still need to complete one or two
steps to cache a copy of a network folder on a computer.

First, you must share the folder on the file server and determine which
specific caching properties should apply to the folder and its files. To
share a folder, right-click it in Windows Explorer and select Sharing.
On the Sharing tab, select the Share this folder option and click
Caching. Figure 1 shows the resulting Caching Settings property page. By
default, the Allow caching of files in this shared folder option is
enabled and Manual Caching for Documents is selected. Manual caching
lets a user manually select from the share point the files or folders
that he or she would like to have available when working offline."

On the Win2000 client laptop, I can see the files when I click on
offline files. However, when I try to open a word file, it says the
network path not available. This, obviously relates to the caching
options provided on the sharing tab on a network share (found only) on a
Win 2000 server.

Perhaps I am missing the entire point, but why is the caching option on
the
server even an issue? What does setting up the cache do for you? I
apologize if I am making things worse, but I have yet to use Offline
Files
and Folders, so I would like to know how this is done in case I should
need
to.

Kent,

I appreciate your help. I believe, however, that I may have mis-stated
the situation. Let's see if I can attempt this again.

1. I know I can use the "Make Available Offline" function in the
properties of the NT4 SHARE on a WIN2000 CLIENT.
2. I know there is no "cache" option on the network share residing on an
NT4 Server.

You said, "You can only make NT 4.0 folder available offline from the
Windows 2000 client." My question is not whether I can use the "make
available offline" feature on the share. You and I agree you can do
that. This is only one half of the equation however. The other half is
to configure the "caching" function on the NETWORK SHARE in question.
The fact that it physically resides on an NT4 Server means you can't do
it, period.

I was simply asking if there is a workaround or whether I was missing
something. In summary - W2K server share and W2K client, you can do
offline files/folders. With NT4 Server share and W2K client - so far I
have to suemise that it's not possible.

.. Let's see, how can I explain this so you'll understand. With
NT 4.0 there is NO cache option for files other than third party
software. You can only make NT 4.0 folder available offline from
the Windows 2000 client. There is NO sophistcated caching with NT.
