This method works fine.  It is still the recommended method for backing up a SQL
server.  Even NTBackup will backup SQL files using this method.  I have used
this method for years.  Now that I have the agent avaialble I use that also as a
belt and suspenders concept.

Although you shouldn't really need to purchase the agent - you do the
native SQL backup and then use BE to back up the resulting file
